Every Shepherds’ Conference is different, and this year was more different than most. The focus on the Scriptures was consistent with past years, but the addition of some other men of God from the Reformed churches was very encouraging as a reminder that, though we may disagree over some important doctrine, we all believe that the Word of God is authoritative as it has been given to us. Warnings not just about the open and obvious heresy of denying the Scriptures, but also a reminder that turning away more often starts with small compromises, was such a valuable call to examine ourselves in the way that we read and teach the Scriptures.
In addition, there is such massive encouragement in seeing Grace Community Church’s love of the brethren on such amazing display as hundreds of church members take time away from their families and even take vacation days from work to do tasks great and small in ministering to men from all over the world during the week. From the smiling faces of greeters and the concierge, to the guys emptying the quickly-filling trash cans or driving golf carts to deliver us smoothly from the parking lot to the campus, we never lacked examples of the love of Christ.
Lastly, it is a joy and privilege to get to go and experience the conference along with a group of men who sacrificed their own time and finances to travel across the country away from their families to invest in growing in their ministries and understanding of the Word. It was wonderful to see the rising excitement but also sober impact on their hearts and minds with the exposure to the relentless teaching and preaching of the Word over four blessed days.
